Geographical Distribution and Growth
1. Where does buckthorn grow best?
The majority of Sea Buckthorn plant's habitat is in northern Europe, China, Mongolia, Russia, and Canada. It is a soil stabilizer, wildlife food and cover, repairs desert areas, and is a source of commercial products. Plants may grow as shrubs of less than 2 feet (61 cm.) in height or trees of nearly 20 feet (6 m.)
2. How is buckthorn controlled?
An effective mixture for treating buckthorn is a water-based solution of glyphosate and triclopyr.
3. How fast does buckthorn grow?
Fruit production is best when the plant is growing in open spaces with plenty of sun, sometimes only taking 2-3 years for stems to reach maturity
4. How long do buckthorn trees live?
If we take the upper end of medium (or moderate), it could take 10 years to reach its maximum growth. If we take the mid-range between the two, I think we could estimate the trees could live 15 to 20 years. Of course, that doesn't guarantee your tree will live that long; but, then, it might live longer than 20 years.
5. What kills buckthorn trees?
The best time to use herbicide is in the fall when buckthorn is one of the few actively growing shrubs. Herbicide container treatments are least effective in the spring. Glyphosate and triclopyr are both effective against buckthorn.
6. What problems does buckthorn cause?
Common buckthorn can inhibit recreational activities in areas where it has become established. Its dense stands can make it difficult to walk along established trails. Common buckthorn also harms the aesthetic value of natural areas by reducing the abundance and variety of native species such as wildflowers.
7. What damage does buckthorn do?
Deep shade for longer periods of time suppresses the grown of native understory plant cover. As a result buckthorn is known to decrease the abundance and diversity of native forest understory species, reduce regeneration of native trees, and alter forest ecosystems.
